"Waterboard Obama"? The G.O.P.'s Latest Crazy

If last week's pulsing headlines about "hate seed sowing" and "race and race" weren't enough to convince me that Sen. McCain is drawing a sinister image of Sen. Obama based on America's tradition of home grown bigotry, today, I stand corrected.

Tuesday, October 14, 2008, Republican Sacramento County leaders removed offensive material from their official party website that intended to link Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama to America's arch enemy-Osama Bin Ladin. The site went further and encouraged people to "waterboard Obama". The term "waterboarding" is a phrase used to describe a form of torture that consists of immobilizing a person on their back with the head inclined downward and pouring water over the face and into the breathing passages. Through forced suffocation and inhalation of water, the subject experiences the process of drowning and is made to believe that death is imminent.

The Governator got involved condemning the material on the website "innaprropriate" and Hector Barajas, a California Republican Party spokesman, said Democrats have been playing the race card, but that the local party went too far in this instance.

Taking credit for the site www.sacramentorepublicans.org is county party chairman Craig MacGlashan. Upon being interviewed by the local press weeks ago about the reported vandalism in which "KKK" "N****r" and "white power" were spay painted over six out of nine of Sen. Obama's campaign billboards (clearly visible from the highway), MacGlashan expressed disapproval: "What you are describing to me is not free speech, it's vandalism. We don't condone it,"MacGlashan said. When asked about the offensive content on the official local Republican party website, he seemed unconcerned: "I'm aware of the content," he said. "Some people find it offensive, others do not. I cannot comment on how people interpret things." He said he would "consider people's complaints" before acting on removal of content.
